Ode to Persephone

you are my friend. that is the truth,
it humbles me and keeps me warm and fed.
you’re in every sunbeam, in every fruit i peel—
a little light behind my eyes.

you hate being called divine, but it’s true.
“I’m not a force of nature, I’m a woman!”
yet there’s something reverent about you.
you’re made to come and go, and I - to love you.

it’s winter now and you are farther from me.
I keep these moments in my heart and hearth.
but time goes on. our fates in life were sealed:
your duty is to leave, and mine - to make it.

to Spring.
